Early last month, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released their final 2018 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule, which will go into effect on January 1, 2018. Included in these changes are new billing codes, expanding the telemedicine services paid for by Medicare. Providers can now specifically bill for telehealth services, such as health risk assessments, care planning for chronic conditions, and crisis-related psychotherapy. These additional billing codes not only make it easier for providers to bill for these services, but this enhances their ability to deliver high-quality healthcare to a wider range of patients. CMS also announced that they are finalizing separate payment codes to cover remote patient monitoring for patients who have one or more chronic health conditions. This exciting news shows that the demand for telehealth service reimbursement, from both patients and their providers, is continuing to grow. Expanding reimbursement for telehealth services is likely to continue as we move into 2018!
